E-Lit . . . Yeah It’s Lit !!!!

This week we took a look at E-literature, something I have honestly never heard of.  As I was looking at the different forms of E-literature, which refers to works with an important literary aspect that takes advantage of the capabilities and contexts provided by the stand-alone or networked computer, I came across E-poetry.  I personally am a fanatic for good poetry and creative pieces, so I had to go in depth with the explanation of this particular form of literature.

E-Poetry is, according to ILooveePoetry.com, poetry that arises from the engagement with the possibilities offered by digital media, which is basically a very cool way for poets to have their poetry displayed to their audience.  As many times as I have taken poetry and creative writing classes, I have never heard of this particular form of poetry and being that our world is so tech-based today. The site I was looking at, Iloveepoetry.com, gave some great genres under the general umbrella of E-Poetry. I have listed them below:

  • Generative poetry is produced by programming algorithms and drawing from corpora to create poetic lines. This is the oldest e-poetic genre and remains relevant today through e-literary genres like the bot.
  • Code poetry is written for a dual audience: computer and human readers.
  • Visual digital poetry arises from Visual, Concrete, and Lettrist poetic traditions and is extended by
  • Kinetic poetry, which uses the computer’s ability to display animation and changing information over time.
  • Multimedia poetry incorporates audio, video, images, text, and other modes of communication in its strategies.
  • Interactive poetry incorporates input from the reader in the poem’s expressive strategies.
  • Hypertext poetry uses nodes and links to structure the poem into spaces for the reader to explore.

Each genre has its own basic structure that makes the particular work fit into this category. The two I found most interesting was Multimedia, which incorporates audio, sound, videos, and text in order to gain the audience’s interest, and Interactive poetry which asks for the readers undivided attention because they are apart of it.

I looked at a work that was in both of the categories I took an interest too called “Gabriella Infinita” by Jaime Alejandro Rodriguez.  Here is a picture of the work itself

The work took me through a lot of links which kept me involved and interested.  I wanted to keep going through it just to understand how it progressed and where it would end.  understanding the time and patience it must have to the poet also gave me a great sense of how invested he truly was to get his piece across to readers.  Even though this author typically used more pictures it still told a story, that was greatly captured and could be understood.

For my personal final project for this class, I will be working on my own piece of E-Poetry and hopefully will gain more depth and understanding from working on one myself. I can see how E-literature, in general, can be a great source of expression, especially coming from an era where technology is so important, and consistently used. This should be fun, and I hope next week have some great content to post dealing with my own E-poetry.

Digital Bot Press!

What-are-Bots

This picture is a clear reflection of how I see certain things as of now.  Exploring digital bots and how they operate was this week’s #Netnarr challenge.  Bots are sort of changing and shaping the new form of communicating between human to human, and “bots” to humans.  it is often hard to even detect anymore within in the web what could possibly be written by bots, and what was created by humans.

Our first exercise in our bot adventure took us on a poetic journey, to say the least. We played a game the involved us doing some bot detecting through poetry works.  I had a tough time with this exercise at first but started to warm up with the last few.  The screen showed different works, and we were to determine if it was written by a human, or a programmed bot fluent in the poetic language.  The bots were actually pretty good with their words and offered some great details n the poetry.  just goes to show how well they retained the info they are programmed with, and how they chose to use it.

As you can see my results came out to about half correct, half incorrect.  Honestly, it was pretty hard to tell the difference at times, unless the work was well known and could pinpoint exactly where I could have heard it or seen it before.

We looked into a twitter account that is a full bot that you can interact with.  If you are looking for certain bot twitters wit things that may interest you and you want to explore other pages on twitter you can tweet this bots twitter account, and shortly you should receive a response with twitter links you can look into.

Next, the class discovered how much of bot we could possibly be using our active Twitter accounts.  I decided to use my class twitter account because I use this one most often as of now.  It’s pretty simple too just type in your twitter name or any other twitter name you so chose and it just pops up.

I discovered that I am 37% bot, and with this, I was shocked because to my knowledge I am the only one who actively tweets on my account, so that’s a little weird.  I decided next to look at Kim Kardashians botometer, because I would feel that she would be one of those into having a system tweet for her, but I found her numbers were close to mine.

Lastly, we made our own bots, which I should say caught my attention. We were basically coding which is time-consuming, but interesting. Currently, my class twitter has a bot I programmed tweeting for me on how meaningless I apparently think memes and gifs are (which is so not true). It led to some interesting debate and reactions from classmates.

Great to see my classmates see the importance of memes and are truly able to stick up for their existence.

Gaming Narrative !

 

 

Here is the gaming narrative I worked on.  Last week in my weekly Egypt mentioned how wwe posted questions to the student in the egypt class, working ontheir gaming idea project.  We asked questions and hped to get a response.  Due to the students being on their spring break, I did not get the opportunity to get the questions answered, but in this “podcast” type of narrative I explained why I chose this game idea to look at, and how I felt it could be impactful to the students.

I used Audacity to record my actual narrative, and edited my questions on to the end, just for time sake.  I also went through and tried to remove all of the “ummmm”, “and”, as well as the “like’s” that I said throughout me talking, and it just sounded annoying, to say the least, lol.  I added birds sporadically through the audio instead of continuously because I wanted to give a realistic outside feel, and I know for me outside I can get lost and sometimes so consumed with what I am doing that I miss the slight chirping from the birds. Every once in a while though I do hear it again and again, so it gave it a more talkative feel.

It was fun getting into the technical details of the interview.  it made it sound a bit more polished, but it can still use a lot of work.

Mapping Things Out (Redlining)

This week we looked into digital redlining, and even looked into how a few game board maps were designed to replicate certain cities or countries.  I chose to look specifically at the pokemon game board.

I looked at it specifically in Newark, because this is a major area near my school.   It also has a good overlapping pattern to follow, which we would later use when have to match up this map, with the ma of Newark, NJ.

Using the website H5P we overlapped a regular redlined map of Newark. Nj.  (Shown Below)

This link here will take you to the finished result, where I can see a comparison of the 2 maps, and possibly determine if they may have some type of relation to where the most poke stops or actual pokemon are placed.

Digital redlining can also be used to see certain signs of gentrification in society.  It shows certain patterns that may be used by different cable companies, phone companies, electric/power companies, or any other company they may be in charge of distribution of housing, or other necessities people may need to survive in an area.  This can be the determining factor of where certain products or things may be sold, and this creates a nonequal opportunity when looking at society as a whole.  This map is from the 1930’s, and still shows signs of being effective in the stats showing how the are distributes it;’s factors.

I enjoyed doing this exercise, although I will say I needed help from my classmates.  I found it hard trying to crop the actual images with Adobe.  It had to be precise in order to have the images overlap each other.  it was important as well to zoom in enough on the actual maps so you could overlap the same sections almost.  In class, we followed the shape of the water that forms around Newark, because that was easy to depict as you zoomed in on the different maps.  All very good skills I plan to surely see again at some point, and great to know I now have them a little more polished.

Week 10 – Exploring Games and Creative Ideas

This week was very interesting to me.  Students from Egypt are creating ideas for Game Ideas and we got a first look at some of their blogs about their games. The topics were not all about fun games though, some were more serious games to put out a message.  I looked at a student named Aly’s Drug Addiction game, which would be a more informative game.  Choosing different drugs at a different point through your virtual adolescence and young adult life will give you different results.  Through this, you will learn the different effects of drugs and how dangerous they can be.  I found this very interesting with the age group it decided to target, high school student and College students.  This is a peak time when most try to experiment with drugs, so I feel that the message will be received by the audience it needs to reach.

Our assignment in our Kean class is to put together a podcast type of interview with the students, hopefully, from Egypt.  I will take the soundbites of my different questions and answers (hopefully) and create a podcast interview.  We will be using the Audacity program we just learned about to piece together the interview.

I enjoyed seeing the different ideas each Egypt student had with their games.  Each was creative and offered a new experience to the “gaming” world.  Not every game played is for fun, but in some ways to reach a certain goal or send a message.

These are my audio post, two questions I asked to Aly about the game.  I was able to connect my audio clips to the post so when she goes to view the post of her game, she will see my interview questions there as well.  Hopefully, I get a response so I’m able to put the audio clips together.  If not I will answer the questions with the answer I will e assuming.  I may be able to add music in the background if I can figure out how to control the level of it so my words can still be heard over it.  We have until the 10th, so I guess we will see.

 

One Egg, One Space! -Tamagachi Experience

Once upon a time, I hatched an egg  . . .  With only 3 buttons !!!! Tamagachi was created by some very tech chic people if you ask me because 3 buttons and you basically had your own personal pet.  Collecting keychains to have different creatures, which were adorable, and absolutely necessary to all the kids in my class.  To see the computer form also take the exact same approach by having only three keys to work the different functions was also very cool to see. It unites the people who understood the message being sent, less is more.

Going into this little world all your own, where you owned something and watched it progressed was fun, and at times seemed challenging.  It was something to do in your spare time, but it could catch your attention for a long time after.

The computer version I was unable to get to work for me.  The three buttons they said to use do not seem to be working on my computer at the moment. I’m using my past experience with the game, and also my new found one through the app through Apple.  Almost a month ago I discovered it in the App store and for nostalgic purposes downloaded it.  At first, it seemed kind of fun, but then it became less entertaining after about 6 minutes of doing the same thing, and suddenly I noticed I was really attached that I began watching TV again.  I shortly ended up deleting it because of all of the alerts I received telling me to “come back and play”.  Seemed do less interesting then it uses to be.

Still, think the game itself was a wonderful idea and added a sense of responsibility to a 3rd graders life!!
